The short version: we keep what you tell us so Book Bestie can understand your reading life. We use an AI service to write your screenings and recommendations. We don't sell your data, show ads, or use trackers. You can ask us to delete everything at any time.
What we keep
- Your account: your name, email address, and your password. We never store your password itself, only a scrambled (hashed) version of it.
- Your reading life: your shelf and the books on it, ratings, debriefs, notes, and anything you tell Book Bestie in chats.
- Your Reader DNA: your answers from onboarding (including things like spice range, how you like stories to end, and topics you want handled with care) and what Book Bestie learns from your debriefs.
- Tester feedback you choose to send us.
How we use it
- To show your shelf and screen books against your preferences.
- To write recommendations, screenings, and chat replies. To do this, the relevant parts of your Reader DNA and shelf are sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, each time you use one of those features.
- To send you emails about your account (like password resets) and a small number of tips while you're getting started. Every tip email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Who helps us run it
- Supabase stores your account and reading data.
- Cloudflare hosts the website and the app's server.
- Anthropic provides the AI that writes screenings, recommendations, and chat replies.
- Google (Gmail) sends our emails.
- Google Fonts provides the app's typefaces (your browser loads them from Google).
We only share with these services what they need to do their job. We don't sell or rent your information to anyone.
On your device
The app saves a few things in your browser so you stay signed in and it remembers small choices, like tips you've dismissed. Your sign-in lasts up to 180 days on that device, or until you sign out. We don't use advertising or analytics trackers.
Your choices
- You can change your answers and your shelf in the app at any time.
- You can unsubscribe from tip emails using the link in any of them.
- You can ask us to delete your account and all your data, or to send you a copy of it, by emailing hello@readbetweenthelines.app. We'll confirm when it's done.
Keeping it safe
Everything travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and each reader can only see their own data. No system is perfect, but we take care with what you trust us with.
Changes
If we change how we use your data, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
